Warriors edge out Spires 2-1 on the road

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Sterling edged the University of Saint Mary 2-1 on Saturday, Oct. 25. Sterling took the lead with a decisive goal, marking the game-winner in the second half after both teams were level at halftime. Sterling's goalkeeper made six saves, crucially preserving the victory despite USM's 25-shot effort.

The first half commenced with both teams making early attempts to break through each other's defenses. Sterling gained early momentum when Jonathan Torres scored the opening goal in the 21st minute, putting them ahead 1-0. Goalkeeper Cassidy Kelly played a crucial role, making key saves to maintain the lead.

However, towards the end of the half, the Spires responded when Robin Van Voorst found the net in the 45th minute, assisted by Isha Hughan, leveling the scoreline. The half concluded with a 1-1 tie as both teams headed into the break evenly matched.

The second half began with Sterling building on their momentum from the first half. Ruben Guzman scored in the 51st minute, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead. Sterling's defense, anchored by Kelly, made crucial saves, including stopping attempts by Hughan and Van Voorst, to maintain their advantage.

Despite USM's persistent offensive efforts, Sterling held firm. Torres nearly extended the lead in the 62nd minute, but his shot was cleared by the Spires' defense. The half concluded with Sterling maintaining their 2-1 lead, successfully withstanding the Spires' attacks to preserve the win.

Torres scored once and led Sterling with four shots, three of which were on goal. Guzman netted the game-winning goal contributing to a crucial offensive performance. Kelly recorded six saves, with three in each half, to maintain a strong defensive stance.

With the win, the Warriors move to 5-10-1 overall, 3-9 in conference. Up next, Sterling will celebrate Senior Day against Ottawa University (9-1-6, 8-0-3) on Saturday, Nov. 1 in Sterling, Kan. The game will mark the final game of the regular season.
