From Explosives to Excellence: Cassidy Kelly’s God-Guided Path Back to Soccer

Goalkeeper Cassidy Kelly took Sterling College Men's Soccer by storm, with an impressive performance in his freshman year earning KCAC Defender of the Week four times and ultimately earning KCAC All-Conference honorable mention in the postseason.

What may be more impressive than his play on the field, is his journey to Sterling College; from his humble beginnings as a high school soccer player to becoming an integral part of the Sterling College Men's Soccer Team, Kelly's story is an unconventional journey of overcoming adversity and embracing new opportunities.

After graduating high school, he initially pursued academics and athletics at the University of Cincinnati-Clermont in the fall of 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans, leading to a period of uncertainty and self-reflection.

In early 2021, Kelly made the difficult decision to leave soccer and drop out of school. It was during this time that he had the audacious idea of joining the military. With a desire for a challenging and demanding occupation, Kelly chose to become an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician in the Air Force.

This role required immense dedication and sacrifice, as he underwent rigorous training to detect, disarm, and dispose of explosives. Graduating from EOD school was a monumental achievement for Kelly, teaching him the power of determination and focus.

As he traveled to various locations and took on missions ranging from bomb threats to VIP protection, Kelly's experiences in the Air Force provided him with a unique perspective on life.

Despite his demanding military schedule, Kelly's passion for soccer never waned. About six months into his Air Force experience, he decided to rekindle his love for the sport.

Joining the Department of the Air Force Soccer Team became a significant goal for Kelly, driving him to train and compete with semi-professional teams in his local area.

His dedication paid off when he had the honor of being part of the team that won gold at the 2024 Armed Forces Soccer Championship.

This achievement opened doors for Kelly, allowing him to represent the United States All-Armed Forces Team in a match against the German military.

With his Air Force contract coming to an end, Kelly knew it was time to explore new opportunities. Thanks to a connection from back home and a college soccer recruiting agency, he found his way to Sterling College.

The prospect of playing soccer and continuing his education in a new environment excited Kelly, and he knew that Sterling was the perfect fit for him.

Throughout his journey, Kelly credits his transformation to the guiding hand of God. Despite facing doubts and uncertainties, he firmly believes that God has been in control of his life's trajectory.

One of Kelly's main motivations for playing soccer at such a high level is his developmentally disabled brother, Charlie. Charlie serves as a constant reminder for Kelly to appreciate his abilities and make the most out of his talents, and he remembers him every game with his initials "CTK" written on his goalkeeper gloves.

As Kelly reflects on his experiences, he acknowledges the profound impact they have had on his growth and development. His time in the Air Force taught him the importance of discipline, resilience and teamwork.

These lessons have translated seamlessly into his role as a goalkeeper for the Sterling College Men's Soccer Team.

One aspect of his time at Sterling that Kelly particularly cherishes is the diversity of his teammates. Coming from different countries and backgrounds, they have enriched his understanding of the world and broadened his perspective.

The friendships he has forged at Sterling College are invaluable, and he finds comfort in the fact that he has made lifelong connections.

As Kelly continues to pursue his soccer career at Sterling College, he remains grateful for the opportunities he has been given. The support of his coaches, teammates, and the entire Sterling community has been instrumental in his success.

In the end, Kelly's journey to Sterling is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams. From his time in the Air Force to his current role as a student-athlete, Kelly's story serves as an inspiration to all.
