Felipoff, Fukushima, Vargas compete in ITA Regionals
The Warriors traveled to Salina, Kan. to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27 in the final tournament of the fall season for Sterling.
In the men's open singles division, Pedro Feliposs started off the round of 64 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Adam Hanson of Kansas Wesleyan University. He continued to roll in the round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-5 win over Rodrigo Sanchez Huertado of Bethel College who beat Sterling's Kazuki Fukushima, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round. Felipoff came up short against Nick Velders of Concordia University losing 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 16.
In the consolation bracket, Fukushima advanced to the round of 16 after a withdrawal from Kansas Wesleyan's Adam Hanson. In the round of 16, he defeated Drake Lowe of Southwestern College, 8-0. Fukushima then fell to Concordia's Santiago Abadia Arango 8-1 in the round of 8.
In the men's open doubles division, Fukushima and Fernando Vargas Sanchez took on Mathys Arnold and Jesse Gerth of Morningside College, losing 8-4 in the round of 32. There play was cut short in the consolation bracket after a 6-3 loss to Carlos Grimaldi and Nudem Koyuncu of the University of Saint Mary.
The Warriors will be back in action for team competitions in the spring.
