Jones breaks school records, wins triple jump at KCAC Championships
Sterling College Warriors competed in the KCAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 14-15 and came away with new school records, personal bests and a conference champion.
Charles Jones had a breakout meet in his debut as a jumping Warrior, winning the men's triple jump with jump of 14.41m (47-3.5) a new school record and NAIA national qualifying B standard. He also broke the school record in the high jump with a mark of 1.95m (6-4.75) to place fourth. Jones also placed fourth in the long jump going 6.86m (22-6.25).
Other competitors in the long jump include Maurice Gray, Trey Dixon and Tod Mastin who finished fifth, sixth and 27th with jumps of 6.79m (22-3.5), 6.73m (22-1) and 5.38m (17-8), respectively.
Gray also competed in the triple jump where he finished seventh with a mark of 13.65m (44-9.5).
In the throws, Blake Robertson carried the crew finishing third in the weight throw, throwing a 16.28m (53-5) to break his own school record. Malachi Bell and Brayden Kermode also competed in the weight throw finishing 13th and 25th with marks of 13.12m (43-0.5) and 10.19m (33-5.25), respectively.
In the shot put, Robertson threw a 13.28m (43-7) to place 11th, Bell threw a 12.96m (42-6.25) to finish 13th and Kermode had a mark of 9.91m (32-6.25) to place 30th.
On the track, Dixon and Mastin represented the Warriors in the 60m dash with times of 7.08 and 7.78 to place 9th and 39th, respectively.
Daryen Jefferson and Wesley Brantley handled the distance for the Warriors, Jefferson ran the 1000m race where he finished eighth with a time of 2:39.69. He also ran the 3000m where he ran a time of 9:40.87 and placed 17th. Brantley ran a time of 2:20.53 in the 800m run to finish 25th.
Overall, the men scored 36 points and finished seventh in the KCAC.
For the women, Janie Perico and Audrey Blake represented the Lady Warriors in mile run. Perico placed 11th with a time of 6:10.53 and Blake finished 15th with a time of 7:18.56.
Chloe Schmidt competed in the shot put where she finished 11th with a mark of 10.62m (34-10.25).
Perico and Jefferson were both named KCAC Champions of Character for the Warriors.
