Jones starts new year with new record in high jump

WICHITA, Kan. – Sterling College opened up the new year with new records at the Friends University First Chance Qualifier on Saturday, Jan. 10. Charles Jones was a highlight for the Warriors breaking his own record in the high jump with a clearance of 1.96m (6-5).

For the men, Jones led Sterling in the jumps with a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.97m (22-10.5) and a fourth-place finish in the high jump.

Blake Robertson carried the throws squad in the weight throw and shot put. Robertson placed third in the weight throw with a heave of 16.55m (54-3.75) while Brayden Kermode finished 12th with a throw of 12.68m (41-7.25). In the shot put, Roberston finished 11th with a mark of 13.15m (43-1.75) while Keaton Miller placed 15th with a throw of 11-69m (38-4.25).

On the track, David Sullivan and Nazar Haydon represented Sterling in the sprints. In the 400m dash, the duo finished 30th and 42nd with times of 54.37 and 58.09, respectively. Haydon also competed in the 60m dash where he placed 77th with a time of 7.49.

In the middle-distance races, Cameryn Gantt competed in the 800m run where he placed seventh with a time of 2:09.77. Ian Chrisler and Wesley Brantley went 20th and 21st in the 600m run with times of 1:34.17 and 1:37.85, respectively. Jace Gaston was the lone Warrior in the distance races, running a time of 10:11.66 in the 3,000m run to finish 12th.

For the women, Audrey Blake was the lone competitor for the Lady Warriors. She finished 24th in the mile with a time 7:12.26.

Sterling Track and Field will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 16 in Topeka, Kan. at the Washburn Rust Buster.
