Softball Falls to Kansas Wesleyan in Conference Opener

Salina, Kan.- The Warriors had a rough conference opening game against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes. Traveling to Salina, Kan. for a double-header, the Warriors only collected three runs through the entirety of the two games. This starts their KCAC record at 0-2, and drops their overall record to 6-12.

Game One- Sterling -2 Kansas Wesleyan -4

The Warriors started well in the first inning, knocking in two runs. After a pair of outs, Maria Casillas singled up the middle. She didn't stay on the bases long as Brennah Jimenez smacked a 2 run homerun, pushing the Warriors into a 2-0 lead. The final out was collected on the next play. The Coyotes answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

The Coyotes sharpened their defense for the rest of the game, not allowing anymore runs to come for the Warriors. The Warriors did gain a few hits during their time at bat, but weren't able to score any more runs. The Coyotes did collect one more run in the second, fifth, and sixth innings, bringing the final score to 4-2 in the Coyotes' favor.

Alyssa Mason pitched the complete game, taking the loss. Mason gave four runs on five hits and struck out two Coyote batters. The homerun by Jimenez is her first of the season.

Game Two- Sterling -1 Kansas Wesleyan -9

The Warriors struggled to find their rhythm in this game, only managing a single run. The Coyotes collected three runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning before the Warriors responded in the top of the third. Sitting on first after her single, Makenna Linden stole second. Mason doubled down the right-field line, giving time for Linden to come around to score and get the Warriors on the scoreboard. Mason was thrown out at home trying to score on a Casillas single to center.

The Warriors had a couple of runners on in the fourth but were not able to plate any runs. Kansas Wesleyan scored two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, leading to the 9-1, run rule shortened five inning game.

Adrianna Castillo and Allie Olivarria shared the pitcher's mound this game. Castillo gave five runs on five hits. Olivarria pitched three innings, giving up four runs on six hits, and struck out four Coyote batters.

The Warriors continue their conference journey against Avila University in Kansas City, Mo. On March 22. The first pitch is at 1 pm, kicking off the doubleheader against the Eagles.
