Viehland pitches a shutout, Warriors split with Doane

Game 1
 
The Sterling College Warriors were victorious in their home opener against the Doane University Tigers winning the first game of a double header, 4-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
 
The Lady Warriors opened the scoring in the first after Kelly Hirlas singled, scoring one run.
 
A single by Bryley Westfahl, and an error helped Sterling extend their early lead in the second.
 
MacKenzie Viehland earned the win for the Lady Warriors. The pitcher allowed two hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out one and walking one. Faith McDonald started in the circle for Doane. The pitcher surrendered four hits and four runs (two earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking two.
 
Hirlas, Madi Green, Desiree Perales, and Westfahl each collected one hit for Sterling. Hirlas and Westfahl each recorded one RBI. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up four walks for the game. Westfahl led the Lady Warriors with five stolen bases. 
 
Game 2
 
Game two saw extra innings as Doane and Sterling went back and forth until the Lady Tigers were able to pull with two runs in the ninth inning to take the 8-6 victory. The game was tied at six in the top of the ninth when Doane's Faith Molina laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring two runs.
 
Sterling was the first to get on the board in the second when Aiyana Campos doubled, scoring one run.
 
The Lady Warriors continued to roll, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third on an inside the park home run by Mariah Cunningham.
 
Doane fought back tying the game in the top of the fifth thanks to an error, and a double by Marisa Marquez.
 
Sterling took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hirlas grounded out, scoring one run, to give Sterling College Warriors the edge, 4-3.
 
McDonald doubled to left field, which helped the Lady Tigers tie the game once again at four in the top of the sixth.
 
An error gave Doane the lead, 6-4, in the top of the eighth.
 
Campos answered back with a single to center field, which helped Sterling College Warriors tie the game at six in the bottom of the eighth.
 
In the circle, Allie Olivarria opened the game for Sterling. The pitcher allowed nine hits and four runs (two earned) over five and one-third innings, striking out none and walking none. Abbi Arroyo led things off in the circle for Doane. The starter allowed four hits and three runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking none.
 
Campos drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Lady Warriors with three runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Cunningham and Campos each collected two hits for the Sterling College Warriors and Cunningham stole two bases.
 
Doane collected 12 hits in the game. Ciara Hudson and Milannie Gonzalez each collected three hits while Marisa Marquez, Molina, McDonald and Ciara Hudson each drove in one run. 
 
The Lady Warriors will be back in action Friday, Feb. 28 at home against Dakota State University.
