Sterling wins two at Friends Invitational
Sterling College softball traveled to Wichita, Kan. for the Friends University Invitational on Saturday, March 1 where they got two victories, one against Mayville State University, 10-2, and the other against MidAmerica Nazarene University, 7-6.
Game 1
In the game against Mayville State, the Warriors run ruled the Comets with a 10-2 victory in five innings.
Mayville scored one run in the first inning and Sterling quickly responded with four of their own in the bottom of the first with a two run RBI on a Aiyana Campos home run, that scored herself and Mariah Cunningham. Bryley Westfahl and Mallory Seidel also found themselves scoring a run.
Desiree Perales also had a two run RBI in the bottom of the second on a home run that found Cunningham and herself crossing home plate. The Lady Warriors finished the fifth inning with three game-ending runs to end things early for Mayville.
Campos, Perales and Kelly Hirlas each recorded an RBI and Cunningham had her way on the base path stealing a game high three bases on her own.
Allie Olivarria led the Lady Warriors from the mound pitching all five innings. Through the game she faced 23 batters, throwing 27 strikes on 45 pitches, recording two walks, two strike outs while surrendering six hits that turned into two runs for the comets.
Game 2
Sterling took MidAmerica Nazarene to extra innings in the second game of the invitational where they were able to come away with a 7-6 victory.
The teams kept it close, both scoring one run in the opening inning of play. However, MNU was able to take a slight edge coming out of the fifth inning where they scored three runs compared to Sterling's two.
Hirlas was able to tie the score back up in the top of the seventh inning with a ground out to the short stop that resulted in a run scored for Westfahl. Madilynn Green put the Lady Warriors on top with a single which turned into a score for Perales.
However, MNU did not go away quietly. Alli VanLanker hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game back up at five and force extra innings.
The teams traded runs in the eighth inning but the Lady Warriors got the final say in the ninth with an RBI from Hirlas to put Sterling on top for good.
Hirlas led the Lady Warriors with three RBIs in the game while Cunningham led Sterling in stolen bases with three.
Starting on the mound for Sterling was MacKenzie Viehland she pitched four and one-third innings facing 21 batters. She threw 44 strikes on 74 pitches, walked two and struck out one surrendering three hits which resulted in four runs (3 earned). Kassedy Midgley earned the win for the Lady Warriors from the mound, pitching the two extra innings. She faced nine batters, threw 20 strikes on 39 pitches, walking two batters and surrendering one hit which resulted in one run.
Sterling will be back in action on March 4 at home in a double header against Graceland University at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
