Sterling College Lady Warriors sweep McPherson College Bulldogs

The Lady Warrior softball team swept McPherson College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 25 at home.

Game One

In an extra inning thriller, Sterling got the 2-1 win over the Lady Bulldogs in game one of the doubleheaders.

The first five innings were slow going for both teams, as both Sterling and McPherson were held scoreless with outstanding defensive performances.

McPherson finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a double from A Solis.

Sterling answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single from Mallory Seidel to right field to bring home Kelly Hirlas for the tying score to force the game into extra innings.

Mariah Cunningham called game with a single to left field to bring home Phoebi Waller for the 2-1 win.

MacKenzie Viehland held down the fort from the circle, pitching all eight innings. The hurler only gave up two hits which resulted in one run, walked three batters while striking out eight.

Game Two

The Lady Warriors came out hot in game two and finished the game in five innings, outscoring the bulldogs 14-2.

Sterling came out with 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning to put things well out of reach for the Bulldogs.

Cunningham got things started for the Lady Warriors with a triple to right field to bring Bryley Westfahl in for the score. Hirlas returned the favor with a single up the middle to bring in Cunningham. A double to right field from Madilynn Green brought home Desiree Perales and Hirlas.

Seidel singled up the middle to allow Green in for the score. Sterling loaded the bases and walk from Sam Graham brought home Waller. Westfahl singled through the left side to bring Aiyana Campos in for the score and Cunningham singled up the middle to bring Waller and Graham in for the two run RBI.

Hirlas grounded out to second base to bring home Westfahl for Sterling's final score of the first inning and giving Sterling the 10-0 lead.

McPherson tried to get things going with a run in the top of the third, but Sterling quickly answered back with a double down the left field line from Cunningham to bring Westfahl in for the score in the bottom of the third.

Sterling extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a single from Camps to bring home Mya Dunn and Aubrey Martinez. Mary Casillas returned the favor with a single for her home to bring Campos in for the run and give the Lady Warriors a 14-1 lead.

The Bulldogs were able to score one more run in the top of the fifth inning to make the final score 14-2 in favor of Sterling.

Allie Olivarria led the Lady Warriors from the center circle. The hurler faced 22 batters through five innings, throwing 57 strikes on 85 pitches. She surrendered five hits which resulted in two runs, walking one batter and striking out five.

Sterling's next doubleheader will be Saturday, March 29 at home against Avila University at noon and 2 p.m.
