Lady Warrior softball faced Friends University at home for Senior Day on Saturday, April 12. This high-powered match up between two defensive teams kept fans at the edge of their seat but left the Warriors with two disappointing losses.
Game 1
Sterling lost the first game, 6-1, with neither team getting anything going until the fifth inning.
It proved to be a back-and-forth battle with both teams the Lady Warriors going three up, three down through four innings. Friends also showed defensive prowess, only allowing one hit through the first five innings.
The Falcons struck first in the top of the fifth inning with a single from Jayden Estabrook to bring home Marina Roman and a sacrifice fly from Izzy Jones to bring in two runs and put Friends up 3-0.
Sterling tried to get things going in the bottom of the sixth inning with Bryley Westfahl taking advantage of being walked to steal second, get around to third and get home on a wild pitch to close the gap 3-1.
Friends put things out of reach in the top of the seventh inning, adding three more runs to their score.
The Lady Warriors were unable to get anything else moving in the bottom of the seventh and the Falcons claimed the 6-1 victory.
MacKenzie Viehland started off from the center circle and pitched six and one-third innings. The senior gave up five hits which resulted in six runs, walking two batters while striking out four. Maria Casillas came in as relief for the final two outs.
Game 2
The Lady Warriors played a much closer game in the second contest of the doubleheader, falling just short of the Falcons with a 2-1 loss.
Sterling jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a double from Kelly Hirlas in the bottom of the first to bring in Mariah Cunningham for the score.
Friends answered back in the top of the fourth with a double to left center from Becca Dunn to tie the game 1-1. The Falcons scored again in the top of the sixth inning with another double from Dunn giving them a 2-1 lead and eventual win.
Allie Olivarria led the Lady Warriors from the center circle pitching all seven innings. The hurler surrendered five hits which resulted in one two runs (one earned) while walking one batter and striking out two.
