Lady Warriors wrap up regular season with doubleheader domination

Sterling College softball traveled to York, Neb. to take on York University in the final games of the regular season on Tuesday, April 23. The Lady Warriors had dominant wins in both games of the doubleheader match up.

Game 1

Sterling left York scoreless in an 8-0 shutout win in game one.

The Lady Warriors got things rolling in the top of the second with a single through the left side from Madilynn Green to bring home Mallory Seidel for the score. Phoebi Waller also chipped in a run with a double down the left field line to advance Kassedy Midgley home putting Sterling up 2-0.

Sterling added two more runs in the top of the third with Desiree Perales hitting things off with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Mariah Cunningham. Aiyana Campos followed it up with a double to right center to bring Kelly Hirlas in for the score. Midgley returned the favor with a single to left field to being home Campos and extend Sterling's lead to 5-0.

Bryley Westfahl singled to the short stop to bring home Samantha Graham in the top of the sixth inning to add to the Lady Warrior's lead.

The Lady Warriors finished things out with two more runs in the top of the seventh with Mya Dunn starting things off with a single through the left side to advance Perales home. Midgley finished things for Sterling with a single to left center to bring home Campos and give Sterling the 8-0 victory.

MacKenzie Viehland led Sterling from the center circle, pitching all seven innings and facing 25 batters. The hurler surrendered four hits, which resulted in zero runs, walking no batters while striking out four.

Midgley led the Lady Warriors in RBIs with two while Cunningham and Campos both recorded a stolen base.

Game 2

The second game of the doubleheader was an even more dominant offensive performance from the Lady Warriors as Sterling came away with the 18-3 win in five innings.

Sterling wasted no time getting on the board with Hirlas starting thing off with a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the first to bring home Westfahl for the run. Perales grounded out to the pitcher which allowed Cunningham to get home and give Sterling the 2-0 lead.

Things continued to roll for the Lady Warriors in the top of the third with Perales working her way around the base path and taking advantage of an errant throw by the catcher as she stole third base to make it home. Midgley then singled through the right side to bring home Campos and Green followed it with a two-run homer to extend Sterling's lead 6-0.

In the top of the fourth, Perales came through with a triple to right field to bring home Westfahl and then took advantage of a throwing error by the right fielder to get home herself, putting Sterling up 8-0.

Sterling's big scoring push came in the top of the fifth inning as the Lady Warriors amassed 10 runs.

Waller got it started with a single up the middle to bring home Maria Casillas. Graham worked her way around the basepath and took advantage of a wild pitch to get home. Cunningham grounded out to the first baseman to bring in Waller for the score. Westfahl worked her way around the base path and stole home.

Campos kept things rolling with a single to right field to advance Hirlas home. Perales took advantage of a fielding error to get home, and Graham grounded out to the second baseman which allowed Campos to advance home for the score. Waller finished out the inning with a three-run home run and give Sterling the 18-0 lead.

York tried to battle back in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer from Chloe Lockhart but the Lady Warriors shut it down and took the 18-3 victory in five innings.

Allie Olivarria started things off from the center circle, pitching four innings and facing 14 batters. She surrendered one hit, which resulted in zero runs, walking zero batters while striking out four. Casillas came in and pitched one-third innings giving up two hits which resulted in three runs and walking one batter.

Madison Hedgecock came in to finish out the remaining two-third innings, she faced two batters and gave up no hits.

Waller led the Lady Warriors with four RBIs while Westfahl led Sterling in stolen bases with two. Both Waller and Green recorded a home run in the game.

Sterling's next game will be in the KCAC Championship Tournament on Tuesday, April 29 in Branson, Mo. Games are still being played to decide official seeding. For more information about the KCAC Softball Championship Tournament click HERE.
