Lady Warriors Start Season with a Win

McPherson, Kan. – The Lady Warriors started the season on the road against the Central Christian College Tigers on Wednesday and got the season started in a positive way. The Lady Warriors scored three second half goals, all off the foot of Jessica Gautreau, to get the shutout 3-0 victory.

The first half both teams were feeling each other out, but neither team was able to get on the board. That all changed early in the second half when Gautreau scored her first ball on a steal on the right side. She took a couple of dribbles and went top shelf in the opposite corner from just outside the 18 yard line. That set the tone for the rest of the half. That goal was less than a minute into the second half, in the 46th minute. Her second goal came off a 50-50 ball that Senior Emorie Sautter won and found Gautreau 10 yards ahead. Gautreau made one touch and fired hard for the back of the net and found it in the 56th minute. The final Warrior goal came in the 70th minute to secure the win. Senior Mika Stone controlled the ball just inside of midfield and passed ahead to Gautreau who hit the ball hard from 25 yards trying to find the bottom corner. Central's keeper all but had the save, when the ball kept rolling off her hands and went just far enough for the score.

Sterling has now won their opening game in back-to-back years. They now travel to Texas to play Nelson University (formerly SAGU) at 8 pm Saturday night. They then turn around to face Paul Quinn on Monday with the long Labor Day weekend at 1 pm.
