Warriors come home with medals from KCAC Fall Individual Championship

Sterling College put together a strong performance at the KCAC Fall Individual Championships hosted by Kansas Wesleyan University in Lindsborg, Kan. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20. Pedro Felipoff came away with a third-place finish in the no. 1 singles bracket, Rubem Bogomoltz won the no. 6 singles bracket and Bogomoltz and Kazuki Fukushima teamed up in the no. 3 doubles bracket to take home third.

In the no. 1 singles bracket, Felipoff started off beating Tabor College's Rayane Sanhaji 8-4 in the opening round. He followed it up with a 8-1 win over Evangel University's Angel Gomez before losing to Bethel College's Jorge Batista in the semi-final match, 9-7. Felipoff then won the third-place match after a withdrawal by Francisco Bravo of Bethany College.

Adam King also started off the no. 2 singles bracket with a win, triumphing over McPherson College's Jason Wasserfuhr 8-1. He then fell out of the tournament with a 8-6 loss to Petre Kollar of Bethel College who went on to win the bracket.

In no. 3 singles play, Fukushima started with an 8-2 win over Avila University's Hayden Carrillo before being bounced out of the bracket by Ilija Martinovic of Evangel with a 8-6 loss.

Fernando Vargas also got off to a strong start with a 8-0 first round win over Kansas Wesleyan University's Gavin Chavez in the no. 4 singles bracket. He then lost 8-6 to the backet runner-up Billy Haoda of Bethel.

Robin Baransi also got a win in the first round of the no. 5 singles tournament with a 8-5 victory over Landan Moots of Avila. He then lost to the runner up, Diego Bsereni of Bethany, 8-6.

In the no. 6 singles bracket, Bogomoltz started with a first-round bye and took advantage with an 8-3 win over Ben Cechak of Kansas Wesleyan in the second round followed by an 8-6 win over Dylan Gwilt of Bethany in the semi-finals to propel himself into the championship game where he took on McPherson's Ayden Johnson. Johnson started off the championship match with a 6-4 win, but Bogomoltz battled back winning the second set 6-2 and finishing with a 10-5 tie-breaker win.

In doubles play, Felipoff and Baransi started strong with an 9-8 (4) win over Tabor's Sanhaji and Sa before being eliminated from the no. 1 doubles bracket by the runners up from Bethel Kollar and Zaidh Zahir.

King and Vargas represented the Warriors in the no. 2 doubles tournament. They started off a little rocky with an 8-5 loss to Oklahoma Wesleyan University's Marius Moulard and Yassine Azehaf. The duo bounced back with a decisive 6-0 win over Southwestern College's Ian Quintero and Victor Arias in a consolation match.

In the no. 3 doubles bracket, Bogomoltz and Fukushima came out with a third place medal. After a first-round bye, the pair beat Ottawa University's Yuki Usada and Valentin Corriger 8-6 before losing to Bravo and Martin Priban of Bethany 8-5. They responded well in the third-place match, beating Balazs Temesvari and Ayden Johnson of McPherson 8-2 for the finish.

The Warriors will be back in action at the ITA Regionals hosted in Salina, Kan. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27.
