Sterling ends in deadlock against Avila
Sterling College and Avila University played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Sterling, Kan. The Lady Warriors took an early lead with two first-half goals, but the Eagles responded with a goal in each half to secure the tie. Sterling's offense showed strength with 17 total shots and 14 on goal, while their goalkeeper made three saves throughout the match.
The first half began with Sterling applying early pressure, as Jessica Gautreau's shot was saved just 35 seconds into the match. Sterling maintained offensive momentum, with Gautreau capitalizing in the 16th minute, assisted by Shayna Dale, to put Sterling ahead 1-0. Avila University quickly responded, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute through Danielle Desmarteau.
Sterling regained the lead in the 26th minute with Rebecca Keeler finishing from a Gautreau assist, making the score 2-1. Despite several attempts from both teams, including a crossbar hit by Francesca Vilca, the half concluded with Sterling leading 2-1.
The second half began with Avila University gaining momentum as Annika Holtorf found the back of the net in the 48th minute, leveling the match at 2-2. Sterling responded with offensive pressure, highlighted by a corner from Gautreau and a shot attempt by Dakota Reid that was saved by Avila's goalkeeper, Mia Kristensen.
Sterling continued to apply pressure with multiple attempts by Vilca, all denied by Kristensen. Despite a strong defensive effort by Sterling's Bella Duckworth, who recorded a save against Lydia Mannino's shot, the game closed with the score tied at 2-2.
Gautreau scored one goal and added an assist while registering five shots, with four on goal. Keeler contributed a goal on her sole shot attempt. Vilca led the team in offensive efforts with seven shots, six of which were on target. Dale provided an assist to support the team's scoring efforts.
Sterling holds a 2-8-1 overall record and is 0-5-1 in conference play and will take on York University (0-8-2, 0-4-1) on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. in Sterling, Kan.
