Sterling comes back from break with win against Graceland
STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College defeated Graceland University, 82-68, at the Gleason Center on Tuesday, Dec. 20, gaining a 16-point advantage behind 48 points in the paint. The Lady Warriors capitalized on turnover opportunities, scoring 20 points off the Yellowjackets' 20 turnovers.
Sterling opened the first quarter with strategic ball movement, highlighted by Kali Briar's early 3-pointer assisted by Bailey Young, establishing a 3–2 lead. The home team capitalized on defensive rebounds and fast breaks, with McKenna Vogl contributing a layup to extend the lead to 8–5. Despite multiple turnovers, the Lady Warriors maintained pressure, and Briar's consistent free-throw shooting restored the lead at 10–9.
As the quarter progressed, both teams exchanged scores, but Sterling managed to stay ahead through defensive stops and rebounding, including a key block and defensive rebound by Vogl. Karlee Jacobs' free throw in the closing seconds ensured Sterling held a narrow 15–14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Warriors began the second quarter with a notable scoring run, fueled by Briar's 3-pointer assisted by Rori Miles at 9:09. The Sterling's defense was effective, forcing five turnovers while securing three steals, including key plays by Vogl and Jacobs. Young made significant contributions with a defensive rebound and a series of successful shots, extending the lead to 25-18 midway through the quarter.
Sterling continued to capitalize on Graceland's turnovers, with Vogl's layup at 4:33 and Miles adding points from the free-throw line, pushing the score to 31-20. Despite the Yellowjackets' attempts to close the gap, Sterling maintained control. Nevaeh Johnson's rebound put back at 0:39 helped the Warriors end the half leading 36-29.
The Lady Warriors initiated the third quarter with a strong offensive presence, scoring 14 points in the paint and capitalizing on turnovers to secure 6 points. Vogl's rebound put back and Johnson's old fashioned three-point play, set an early tone. Jacobs' defense was pivotal, resulting in multiple steals that contributed to a stretch where Sterling led by as many as 10 points at one point.
Throughout the quarter, the Lady Warriors maintained the lead through effective bench contributions, accounting for 14 points, and consistency at the free-throw line with eight successful shots. Despite a scoring surge from Graceland, including multiple 3-pointers, Sterling's offense, highlighted by Young's layup and Johnson's consecutive baskets, ensured they stayed ahead.
The Lady Warriors closed the quarter with a 60–54 lead, demonstrating resilience by responding to the Yellowjackets' late push with key free throws and a steady defensive display to end the quarter.
Sterling started the fourth quarter with a strong offensive showing, capitalizing on a turnover by Graceland's Maxine Ampofo. Vogl initiated the scoring with a jumper, and Jacobs contributed significantly with steals and assists, which helped maintain momentum.
Briar played a pivotal role with key offensive rebounds and put-backs, while Young added consecutive layups to push Sterling's advantage further. The home team applied pressure defensively, forcing multiple turnovers and limiting Graceland's scoring opportunities.
As the quarter progressed, Sterling continued to dominate in the paint, outscoring Graceland 18–6 in that area. Jacobs further sealed the game with a late 3-pointer, and the Warriors closed out with a commanding 82–68 victory.
Briar led the team with 22 points, connecting on six field goals and converting all eight free throw attempts. Vogl added 15 points while contributing defensively with four steals and two blocks. Jacobs recorded six steals and dished out five assists, impacting both ends of the court. Young finished with 16 points, hitting seven of eight shots from the floor and collecting eight rebounds. Johnson had big contributions off the bent with 15 points and a blocked shot.
With the win the Lady Warriors move to 11-2 on the season, 7-0 in conference. Up next, Sterling will start the new year wear with a conference matchup against University of Saint Mary (8-5, 5-2) on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m.
