Warriors come up short in North Newton

Bethel captured a 34-26 victory over Sterling on Saturday, Oct. 4 in North Newton, Kan. Sterling's passing game contributed two touchdowns and 254 yards, but the Threshers' ground attack, highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown run, proved detrimental to the Warriors. Despite Sterling's defensive effort, including a two blocked punts, Bethel College's balanced offensive performance secured the win.

The first quarter began with Sterling starting at their own 25-yard line. After a short gain on a pass completion from Rocklin Baptista to Jayeden Easley, Sterling's drive stalled and resulted in a punt. Bethel then moved the ball into Sterling territory but was halted by a crucial tackle from Tyler Fassio, forcing a turnover on downs.

Sterling's ensuing drive saw AJ Brown rush for 7 yards, but the offense could not capitalize further and punted. Later, Baptista connected with Kenneth Arroyos for a 12-yard gain to extend a drive that ended with a punt. The Sterling defense held strong, with Jorge Cereceres blocking a Bethel punt, setting the team up at the Threshers' 5-yard line.

With time winding down, Samuel LeBlue rushed for 3 yards before fumbling at the goal line. The fumble was recovered in the end zone by Kaleb Cape for a touchdown, giving Sterling a 6-0 lead as the quarter closed.

Sterling began the second quarter on defense, halting Bethel's initial drive and forcing a punt. AJ Brown led a response with consecutive rushes gaining 11 yards, but the drive stalled due to incomplete passes, resulting in a punt. A fumble recovery by Rylan Cass at the Bethel 26-yard line shifted momentum, but Sterling's offense couldn't capitalize, turning the ball over on downs.

Bethel then executed a 92-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Madison, converting the extra point to extend their lead. Sterling's next drive featured a 38-yard pass from Baptista to Brown, but the Threshers' defense held firm at the goal line. Despite a late push by Bethel, Sterling's defense held them to a failed extra point attempt, closing the half with Bethel leading 13-6.

Sterling took control early in the third quarter with a successful drive highlighted by Baptista's effective passing game, culminating in a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ethan McCarthy. James Henisey's extra point tied the game up at 13. Bethel attempted to respond, but Sterling's defense held firm, forcing a punt.

Sterling capitalized on a special teams play when Jace Carr blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown, further asserting their momentum. Henisey's subsequent kick was good giving the Warriors a 20-13 lead. However, Bethel managed to level the score again late in the quarter with a 70-yard touchdown pass, closing the third quarter tied at 20-20.

Sterling began the fourth quarter with a defensive stop, as Arroyos broke up a key pass, leading to a short Bethel punt. LeBlue led Sterling's offense with a series of runs, though progress stalled and resulted in a turnover on downs. Bethel capitalized on the ensuing possession, with Houston Herrin breaking free for a 74-yard touchdown run, extending Bethel's lead.

Sterling quickly responded, orchestrating an 87-yard drive capped by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Baptista to McCarthy. However, a missed extra point attempt left Sterling trailing. Bethel answered with another scoring drive, as Herrin added a short touchdown run, and the PAT was successful, increasing their advantage.

In the closing moments, Sterling's attempts to rally were halted by Bethel's defense, including a sack on Baptista. Despite Sterling's late defensive efforts to stop Bethel with consecutive tackles for loss, time expired with the score at 34-26 in favor of Bethel College.

Rocklin Baptist completed 25-of-48 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. McCarthy recorded five receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns, making him a key target. Arroyos added five catches for 52 yards, contributing to the passing game. On defense, Derek Bean led the team with 10 total tackles, anchoring the defensive effort.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference will take a bye week this weekend, and the Warriors (1-5) will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18 for Sterling College's homecoming game against no. 17 ranked Southwestern College (5-1).
